MAY I have your attention please?

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Well, April has come and went…and I wrote the entire month! I wrote a poem each and every day but I shared only that one. Tsk. No one reminded me. I guess no one was reading…so C’est la vie! If no one is around then no one will catch my missing posts! =) It all works out, right?

May! What do I love about May? I am supposed to pick something every month. I must be getting close to a year on that… then I shall stop. And think of something new. I love the rain of May. And May Day. And Cinco de Mayo which it just happens to be TODAY! So, in honor of Mexican tradition and heritage… I’d like to share a few of my favorite things or people from Mexico.

Frida Kahlo

Frieda Kahlo y Calderón) was a Mexican painter, born in Coyoacán. Perhaps best known for her self-portraits, Kahlo’s work is remembered for its “pain and passion”, and its intense, vibrant colors. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.1

The Two Fridas by Frida Kahlo

The Mexican Muralists (José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros)  These painters were very important towards pushing social and political change through their art. Go on, go google them.

David Alfaro Siqueiros

Sor Juana Ines (Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a 17th century nun, poet, scholar and feminist!) Read more about her here.

I could keep going. There are so many things I like about Mexico. The music, their history. Their culture. Their FOOD! Yummy! I say, take a moment and do some research. Order a book on the History of Mexico. Learn more. =) It is worth getting to know. =)
Happy Cinco de Mayo!

What I love about March

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

I love that winter is holding on this month, as if it is just not quite ready to end. I love the rain of March. I love St. Patrick’s Day. I really love St. Patrick’s Day. I love green. I love that one of my very, very favorite people in this world was born in March. I love celebrating her birthday and that it is one of the only birthdays in this month in my family and friends. I love the birds start to return in March, nesting and preparing for mating. I love that Spring is right around the corner. I love that March celebrates Women’s History Month, Mardi Gras, National Red Cross Month and National Reading Day (Dr. Seuss’ Birthday)!

I love March!

Hearts. Love. Freedom to shameless plug Love. Romance but not the kind with roses and fireside cuddling but real romance with quirky comments and deep laughing over inside jokes. I love that it is still Winter and everyone is so eager for Spring but Winter isn’t letting go just yet. I love chocolate. I love Valentine’s Day and making Valentines for people I love. I love that this month only has 28 days in it (mostly). I love red. I love the hope of Spring in commercials, advertisements and people’s eyes. I love being nice. I love the cold evenings forcing me to stay covered up just a little bit longer… begging me to read more.

December is a wonderful month…what is NOT to love about it?

Snow. Santa Claus. Holly. Mistletoe. Christmas trees, oh! I do so love the evergreens and pine trees. Cookies baked fresh. Sweaters. Scarves hand knitted by my very dearest friend. Mittens and hats, that I wear often. My birthday. Candy canes. Blankets of frost. Christmas carolers. Christmas music! I love love love Christmas music! =) Peppermint hot chocolate. Warm teas. Wrapping presents. Giving. Love. Family. Friends. Good cheer. Pies. Stories read to me or by me. I love Winter Soltice which falls on the 21st or 22nd of December, this year it is December 21st. Long lines where you can meet the most interesting people. The crunch of the ice under my boots, and the cold or wet excuse to wear them!

December is good.

What I love about November

Monday, November 1st, 2010

I love November.

The rain falls and washes away the dry of summer and I couldn’t be more relieved. I love the muted skies and crisp breezes. I love the trickle of rain all day replenishing the trees and grass…filling up the rivers and streams. I love family and friends and how the upcoming holidays seem to bring them just a little bit closer, a little more often. I love sending greeting cards and updates to how my fall has begun.

I love leaves blown around, sticking to my windowsill. I love that my chickadees, the crows, the woodpeckers and my hummingbabies still visit when all the other birds have flown south.

I love making imprints of leaves and telling everyone how grateful I am for all the little and big things they do that affect my life without seeming corny, or despite it! I love that Autumn warms its colors to help fight off the chill setting in.

I really, really love November!

I can’t believe how quickly this year has passed by. It is already November! And I am terribly behind in my reading goals because they were very specific—not from a lack of reading, I just tend to read a bit more organically by choice. I am also behind in my list of things to do.

Having said that… I am NOT behind in my journey to niceness. I have been diligently sending postcards to strangers and friends alike. I have been leaving little notes and gifts. I have been paying for the people behind me in drive-up windows. I have been following the suggestions by the wonderful Operation Nice. And I have been spending time with the people I care about, and isn’t that the point of life?

I am grateful it is November. And I am looking forward to each and every day of this month. =)

What I love about SEPTEMBER…

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

I love love love September for so many reasons.

I love that August is over, summer is closing down, sending the sun home early at night to prepare for an earlier rise, to save a bit of our energy…allowing us to unwind from the long, hot days of summer. September is fresh grown apples (my favorite!) and sweet potatoes, oranges and reds and vibrant yellows gently surrounding us. It is leaves falling all shades of golden carried by the sweet September breeze coaxing the trees to let go of their deep greens in favor of the more interesting crimsons and burnt siennas and goldenrods. It is Fall. Autumn. My favorite time of year. I love September because of one my very favorite people in the entire world was born this month. I love it because it is a time of new beginnings. Distinct in its efforts to meld two of the harshest seasons together, a feat of wondrous proportions. A transitional season of beautiful colors and delicious harvests, a nip at night just enough for a sweater and I love sweaters! It is the relief from 100 degree days melting into one another, parching my energy. It is the rain that restores everything alive…everything the summer scorched.

I love September for soups and rooted vegetables. I love it for its early nights begging to be filled with the comfort of literary treasures new and old. I love September for its crisp mornings and breathtaking views. It is when the birds return to warmer places for the preparation of colder months ahead.

I really, really love September!
