  • Day 2 — Smile at ten strangers (done)
  • Day 3 — Hold the door open for ten strangers (done)
  • Day 4 — Give the gift of music (done)
  • Day 5 — Donate books to the library (done)
  • Day 6 — Offer up free babysitting hours to friend (done — offering… the hours are still yet to be redeemed)
  • Day 7 — Make something for someone for no particular reason but I can… (done– pillow case — see below)

I sewed this all myself! How cute is that?

I am a nice person in general. I try to do random acts of kindness all year long. =) So, there you have it. Week accomplished. And what did you do for random acts of kindness?

Extreme Kindness Challenge

Monday, February 14th, 2011

This week is Random of Acts of Kindness week (February 14th – 21st). And so, I decided to participate in the Extreme Kindness Challenge,

For seven days during RAK Week we invite you to take the Extreme Kindness Challenges.

We will suggest a new Act of Kindness each day. Choose a time when it works for you to do the Act of Kindness, but be sure to do it at least once each day for seven days. If you don’t want to do our idea but instead decide to do a challenge of your own, that counts too!

Our mission is to inspire you to act and share. We know that act of Kindness is our Ticket to a Kinder World!

So, for the next seven days I will check in with the site and see the suggestions and try to follow them. Day 1 was to send a note of appreciation to someone you love. I sent three! =) Fun stuff. Thanks Melissa (from OperationNice) for suggesting this site! =) And I am taking you up on your offer to do the challenge!

This 2011, I pledge to be a little bit nicer…

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

I will hold the door for people behind me. I will say “please” and “thank you.” I will smile at strangers. I will compliment people. If I’m not sure whether I should greet someone with a handshake or hug, I will opt for the hug. If I see someone having trouble, I will offer help. I will try to perform at least one Random Act of Kindness a week. I will be grateful. I will not hold grudges. I will always do my best to be humble, empathetic, and honest. I will be mindful and considerate of the people around me. I will be kind to people, animals, and nature. All in all, I promise to be nicer!

And I will also try to be a little nicer to myself. =) This is the perfect new year’s resolution. Thank you Melissa for nudging us towards being even nicer. =)

Let’s be the people we want to like…

Everlasting Love

There is a common thread of dislike of other people pervasive in our world today. People hating people. People losing patience with people. People being rude and disrespectful. People lacking people skills. So much aggression, so much to dislike. And it feels almost hopeless… as if we are inextricably bound to this thread, even if we want to like people… even if we want to ‘be nice’ and shine light and not spew hatred or anger. But, it is not hopeless… or at least not for me. Or for you. =)

Let’s bet the people we want to like. Let’s hold doors open for people and share our umbrellas in the rain. Let’s return lost items and let’s say thanks whenever we get the opportunity. Let’s fill out comment cards and praise the good in people. Let’s look for things to like and let’s emulate them. Let’s go the extra mile to help someone, particularly if they ask. Let’s encourage others whenever we can. Let’s smile more. Look into the eye of the person in front of us. Let’s call our family and friends—ask how they are doing… and really listen to their response. Let’s write note cards. Let’s pay for the person behind us. Let’s reserve judgment. Let’s make positive assumptions rather than negative. Let’s approach someone first. Say hello. Say hello again next time. Bring an extra sandwich for lunch. Let’s be polite and patient.

Let’s be the people we want to like…

What I love about SEPTEMBER…

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

I love love love September for so many reasons.

I love that August is over, summer is closing down, sending the sun home early at night to prepare for an earlier rise, to save a bit of our energy…allowing us to unwind from the long, hot days of summer. September is fresh grown apples (my favorite!) and sweet potatoes, oranges and reds and vibrant yellows gently surrounding us. It is leaves falling all shades of golden carried by the sweet September breeze coaxing the trees to let go of their deep greens in favor of the more interesting crimsons and burnt siennas and goldenrods. It is Fall. Autumn. My favorite time of year. I love September because of one my very favorite people in the entire world was born this month. I love it because it is a time of new beginnings. Distinct in its efforts to meld two of the harshest seasons together, a feat of wondrous proportions. A transitional season of beautiful colors and delicious harvests, a nip at night just enough for a sweater and I love sweaters! It is the relief from 100 degree days melting into one another, parching my energy. It is the rain that restores everything alive…everything the summer scorched.

I love September for soups and rooted vegetables. I love it for its early nights begging to be filled with the comfort of literary treasures new and old. I love September for its crisp mornings and breathtaking views. It is when the birds return to warmer places for the preparation of colder months ahead.

I really, really love September!

More postcards (Nice Journey)

Friday, August 27th, 2010

I sent out two more postcards this week both to people I know. It has been nice to send postcards to people. I hope they are received in good spirits.

I also stumbled upon a great way to be charitable AND to read at the same time. You can read more about that at BeNonsensical. And I joined another nice cause over at itstartswithus.com where I joined the ‘Drop a Love Bomb mission. They send me an email each week with a story about a blogger, a person who needs some encouragement. And then I follow the link and leave a comment or message. I’ve done two so far. I think it is an excellent way to drop in on someone when they need it the most! =)

It is fun being nice. =)

Random Stranger Mail #1 AND #2 (Nice Journey)

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

I don’t think I blogged about the first note I sent to a random stranger. I sent it on the first day of my nice adventure! Someone suggested I mail it to someone in Illinois and so I did. I did a little search on whitepages dot com and used one of my favorite words as the last name and voila! The first stranger was chosen.

This time I chose a particular name (first and last) from random things I love and left the state open… and I came up with a lady with the loveliest name ever.  I mailed it yesterday! How fun is this? I found some postcards but I am already down to three. Postcards are perfect because you don’t have to fill them up like cards but rather just simple messages. =) I think I should design some postcards and have them printed up. This might help conserve money. =)

It is fun to be nice!

Postcard #3 (Nice Journey)

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Weeks zip by, don’t they? Today is the day for my weekly postcard to family and/or friends (niceness journey). And I chose an oversized card to send with lots and lots of personal updates. I really like these postcards. I need to figure out how to make my own postcards…I like variety. =) I’m thinking recycled paper, about 80lb. Hrm…

Home made Valentine #1 (Nice Journey)

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Today is the 2nd Tuesday of August and thus, I set out to make a home made valentine. I wanted to do something with Pippi Longstocking because who can motivate a girl like our favorite freckled-face-redhead-girl? I found a picture to color of her and I thumbed through Pippi’s Extraordinary Ordinary Day (by Astrid Lingren) and found the perfect quote. I combined the picture and the quote in psp. And here is the result,

I printed it full page and then wrote a letter around the picture to a friend I have not spoken to or written to at all in months and not reconnected with in years. So, I will mail this and hope it is received as happily as it was made. =) I also apologized for disappearing so often, for being easily distracted for long periods of time. (Making amends…1 down, 2 to go!)

Postcard #2 (Nice Journey)

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

I owe an apology to someone I care a lot about. I am often so inside my own head I do not realize how my retreat within, my withdrawal from the everyday affects others. I recently avoided someone when they needed me, not because they needed me and not really on purpose but more because I was in my own head and trying to avoid the world. No matter my reason, I hurt someone. So, what better time than NOW to send a postcard with a simple apology and words expressing how important this person is to me? That is what I did this morning. Good Morning.

For the record, I am sorry. And love is fade resistant, no matter how far I go, no matter how long I am silent.
